👉How to Plant Seeds
Starting seeds indoors is an excellent way to kickstart your garden. Follow these steps to ensure successful seed germination:
👉Here are Two Stages to Plant Seeds
- Creating a Grow Area
- Sowing the Seeds
👉Part 1: Creating a Grow Area
- Timing
- Choose a Tray
- Place the Tray
- Fill with Seed Starting Mix
- Moisten the Mix
1-Timing:
- Begin planting seeds 6-12 weeks before the last frost date.
- The actual growing time depends on the specific plants you intend to grow.
- Check the packaging of your seeds for any additional steps (such as soaking or chilling) before planting. You can find region-specific growing dates in the Old Farmer’s Almanac.
2-Choose a Tray:
- Cell Tray: Opt for a cell tray with drainage holes. This allows seeds to grow without interference from neighboring cells. You can find these trays at gardening stores.
- Cardboard Egg Carton: Alternatively, make a seed tray from a cardboard egg carton. After using all the eggs, poke holes at the bottom of each cell for proper drainage.
3-Place the Tray:
- Set the cell tray inside a large, flat plastic tray.
- The flat tray makes it easier to transport and water your seedlings.
- Watering in the flat tray promotes downward root growth. You can also use a baking pan as an alternative.
4-Fill with Seed Starting Mix:
- Use a sterile seed starting mix (available in stores or online) to fill each cell.
- Overfilling is okay since the mix will settle once wet.
- Avoid using coarse potting soil, as fine seed mix works better for germination.
5-Moisten the Mix:
- Wet the seed starting mix with a watering can.
- Ensure it’s damp but not overly saturated.
- Excess water should drain through into the tray underneath.
👉Part 2: Sowing the Seeds
- Test Old Seeds
- Choose Your Seeds
1-Test Old Seeds:
- Submerge old seeds in water for 15 minutes to check their viability.
- If you have old seed packets, this test will determine if the seeds are still good to grow.
2-Choose Your Seeds:
- Visit a local garden store to select seeds suitable for your climate and the current time of year.
- Great beginner options for vegetables and herbs include green beans, looseleaf lettuce, and basil.
- For flowers, consider sunflowers, cosmos, and poppies.
Remember, patience and care during the seed germination process will yield healthy seedlings ready for transplanting into your garden. Happy gardening! 🌱🌼
