Growing ginger is easy and rewarding. With just a pot of soil and a ginger root from your local grocery store, you can have near-infinite fresh ginger at your fingertips. Plus, the tropical shoots add a touch of greenery to your home.

👉How to Plant, Grow, Harvest, and Propagate Ginger

  1. Choose a Ginger Root
  2. Planting Ginger
  3. Care Tips

1. Choose a Ginger Root

  1. Select a Root
  2. Cut and Heal

➡️Select a Root: Purchase a firm ginger root from your local grocer. Look for one that’s at least 5 inches (13 cm) long with several visible buds.

➡️Cut and Heal: Cut the root into 1–1.5 inch (2.5–3.8 cm) pieces, ensuring each chunk has at least 1 bud. Let the chunks heal on the counter for about 3 days to allow the exposed inside to callous over. Soak the rhizomes in water overnight to rinse off any anti-growth chemicals added by the grocer.

2. Planting Ginger

  1. Choose a Pot
  2. Planting Depth
  3. Outdoor Planting

➡️Choose a Pot: Use a 12-inch (30 cm) clay pot with nutrient-rich soil. Ginger thrives in well-draining soil, so mix loamy potting soil with well-rotted compost or thick mulch.

➡️Planting Depth: Plant the ginger chunks 2 inches (5.1 cm) beneath the surface, laid horizontally. Leave about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of space at the top of the pot.

➡️Outdoor Planting: If you’re in a seasonal climate, plant ginger after the last spring frost or at the start of the wet season. Ginger is tropical and won’t survive frost.

3. Care Tips

  1. Sunlight
  2. Watering
  3. Fertilizing
  4. Harvesting

➡️Sunlight: Keep your ginger plants in direct sunlight at around 68°F (20°C).

➡️Watering: Keep the soil moist but not too wet. Water twice a week in containers or once a week in raised beds.

➡️Fertilizing: Apply liquid fertilizer every few weeks.

➡️Harvesting: After 8-10 months, dig up the entire plant, trim off the shoots, and save some root chunks for replanting.

Now you’re on your way to enjoying homegrown ginger! 🌱
